How to be a good parent

Children are great responsibility but also great happiness

If you have kids you know how much you care about them and how many hours you spend on them. Sometimes it is frustrating that you cannot have your time, but you have to devote to children. For example, your friends call you to go out but you can’t, because there is no one to babysit your child. There is no need to mention all those nights without sleep when they were babies. Although it’s hard time to time, you know that it is worth it, and that’s what gives meaning to life, that’s the thing that will always pull you out of the bed and make you feel fulfilled.

Be a good role-model

We so often notice things that we don’t like about our children. There are many various, tiny reasons that make angry with our kids. It can be anything, maybe the clothes that they leave all around the house, and maybe they do not behave properly in particular situations, but did you ever ask yourself is that because the kid imitates you? Well it is very likely that your kid learned how to behave watching you in those situations. If you see him yelling when he/she is frustrated maybe it is because you are yelling in front of him, not paying attention that your adorable son or daughter watching you and that he or she tries to do same things as you do. So you should start changing yourself instead of changing your child’s bad habits.

Be the person you would like your child to become when he/she grows up. If you smoke and you wouldn’t like your kid start smoking, quit cigarettes, quit drinking, and quit any bad habit because it is very likely that your child will have them too. Instead of that, you can work out, go jogging, or read books, choose whatever you want and you will see results.

Don’t be overprotective

Your duty is to educate your child how to behave and to prepare him/her for his/her life as an adult. Taking that in consideration, you can’t keep him at comfortable and cozy home which provides the safety he/she needs, all the time. Time to time you have to be ready to give him/her freedom and to let him/her make his or her own decisions. It doesn’t matter if it is dangerous and risky, the only thing you need to do is to provide him/her with all the information he/she needs to know for his/her life while he/she is growing and show the path of how to take decisions which are the best for his/her future.

If your kid wants to go to a concert, don’t forbid it, instead you should talk to your child about it and you should tell him/her everything he/she needs to know. Of course, if you think it can be really dangerous explain to your child kindly, why it is not good idea to go there. But remember that one day he/she is going to become adult and you can’t be there all time for them.

Communicate with children

You should be a best friend for your kid in order to make him/her comfortable to talk to you about everything. You don’t want to be the last person that finds out your kid started playing football, or eventually that he is going to marry someone. Be the perfect friend for your child, but that includes that you must not disapprove anything he/she does. That is one of the most common mistakes parents do. No matter whether you think something is good or bad, you should always support your children and you should always talk about your personal experiences and about what you have gained through every single one of them. That means that you should inform them about possible risks and ask them if they are ready to sacrifice themselves for their choices. Let them make their decisions and let them make mistakes.

Don’t impose them your convictions

You are not right about everything and you know it. Then, why should you make your kids believe you are? If they have different opinion than you, let it be. You don’t always agree with other adults, why should you always need to agree with your kids? Explain to them that it is totally normal that you two have different opinions about something, and at the end of day, you have different personalities.
